Note about the Greek: since there is still no easy way to put an accent on top of a makron, I decided to omit the accent on long vowels that are taking an acute accent. For example, I write Διονῡσιος instead Διονύσιος.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Gesta Thōmæ Serrāriī

Tom Sawyer
Thōmās Serrārius

Tom, you Tom!

You’ll have to finish yourself, Jim!

Thōmā, tū Thōmā!

Perficiendum erit tibi ipsī, ō Jācōbe!

I won’t notice your not helping me, Tom! But I’ll sure miss the stories you do tell!
Nōn sentiam mē ā tē nōn adjuvārī, ō Thōmā! Dēsīderābō autem tuās nārrātiunculās!

Drat that boy! Always late! I declare you’d never know that Sid and Tom was even half-brothers! We’ll eat without him!
In bonam rem puer semper sērus! Numquam agnōscās Dionȳsium Tōmānque etiam uterīnōs esse! Sine eō cēnābimus!

Let me help you, cousin Mary!
Sine ut adjuvem tē, cōnsōbrīna Marīa!

Land o’ Goshen! Your hair looks like a hurrah’s nest! Did you wash your hands good? Well, eat afore your food’s cold!
Ēcastor! Capillus tuus similis est eō Gorgonis! Abluistīne manūs? Esto, ēde antequam
cibus tuus frīgēscit.

Νὴ τὼ θεώ.

Yes, aunt Polly!
Hoc agō, mātertera Miryām!

Tom, it was powerful warm in school today, wasn’t it? But instead of staying there you didn’t go swimming?
Ō Thōmā, nōnne hodiē fuit diēs calidissima in lūdō?

Ὦ Θωμᾶ, ἆρα οὐχ ἡ σήμερον θερμοτάτη ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ διδασκαλείῳ; Δέον δέ σε ἐκεῖ παρεῖναι, μήτι εἰς νεῦσιν ἦλθες;

No. Well, not very much.
Nōn. Scīlicet nōn maximē.

Page 3

You’re not too warm now, though.

Tamen nōn es nunc calidior.

Some of us stuck our head under the pump! Mine’s still damp see?

Aliquī dē nōbīs caput sub antliam fīxērunt. Etenim meum adhūc madet.

Well, if you only pumped water on your head, you wouldn’t have had to undo your collar where I sewed it and it still is sewn! I was sure you’d played hooky from school and went swimming!

Aunt Polly, didn’t you sew his collar with white thread?

Μātertera Miryam, nōnne fīlō albō collāre ejus suistī?

Θεία Μαριάμ, ἆρα οὐ νήματι λευκῷ τὸ περιδέραιον αὐτοῦ ἔρραψας;

I.. It could have turned black, couldn’t it in the sun?

Ouch!

P… potuit id nigrum ā sōle reddī, quidnī?

Attat!

Τ… τάχ᾽ ἄν τοῦτο ὑπὸ τοῦ ἡλίου μελανθείη, πῶς γὰρ οὔ; I’ll tell the boys you can’t go swimming! Good bye, Tom!

You’re enough to give a saint the conniptions!

Next day

Play hookey on Friday, whitewash on Saturday!

Postrīdiē

Diē Veneris mūniīs neglēxistī, diē autem Sāturnī dealbābis.

That whole great big fence?

Every inch of it!

Num illa pergrandia sæpta?

Tota vērō!

Μὴ ἐκεῖνον τὸν ὑπερμεγέθη φραγμόν;

I’ll tell the boys you can’t go swimming! Good bye, Tom!

Dīcam sodālibus nōn licēre tibi natātum īre! Valē, ō Thōmā!

Page 4

Clear the river! I’m the steamboat Big Missouri! Bound for St. Louis! Full speed ahead!

Fluviō cēdite! Sum enim nāvis vapōrāria Missūrius Magnus! Rectā Lūdovīcōpolin! Citātō gradū!

I’m going swimming, but, of course, you’d rather work!

Ego quidem natātum eō, tū autem vidēris certē labōrem præferre!

What do you call work? All I know is that this suits Tom Sawyer!

Quidnam labōrem appellās? Enimvērō hoc Tōmæ Serrāriō convenit!

Come on now, you don’t really like it!

Age nunc, jocō gaudēs!

Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?

Numquid cotīdiē ānsa puerō datur ad sæpta dealbanda?

Μὴ καθ’ ἡμέραν ἡ ἀφορμὴ παιδὶ δίδοται τοῦ λευκοῦν φραγμόν;

Say, let me whitewash a little!

Audī, sine mē dealbāre paulum!

No! If it were the inside, I wouldn’t mind, but aunt Polly’s awfully particular about the outside!

Nōn. Nam sī interior pars esset, nihil istud ego morārer, sed mātertera Miryam nimium dē exteriōre cūrat.

I’d be careful! Please! I’ll give you this apple!

Dīligenter agam. Obsecrō tē. Tibique dabō mālum hoc.

Well, I was getting hungry for an apple! Here!! Quick, before I change my mind!

Esto, nam volēbam mālum! Ecce! Sed quam celerrimē antequam dē sententiā dēcēdō.

Several feet of fence later..

Poor Joe, whitewashing someone else’s fence!

Multīs sæptīs post…

Ō mīser Jōsēph, quī dealbās sæpta aliēna!

Humph! You don’t know what fun is! I’m lucky Tom let me trade him for a turn at this!

Vah! Nescīs quid dēlectātiō sit! Fēlīx enim sum, tempus ā Thōmā mercātus!

Φεῦ.

Page 5

I’ll give you my kite to be next!

Tibi dabō dracōnem meum volāntem ut sequar!

Then me, Tom! Here are twelve marbles!

Tertius ego, ō Thōmā! Ecce duodecim nucēs!

You can have my favorite dog collar!

Habeās grātum mihi collāre canīnum!

Soon

Aunt Polly, Aunt Polly!

Mox autem…

What is the matter now? Can’t you tend to work and leave a body in peace?

Quid hoc negōtiī est? Nōnne dāns tē labōrī omittēs quemquam?

Τί τὸ πρᾶγμα τουτί; Ἆρ’ οὐ τοῦ ἔργου ἐχόμενος ἀφήσεις οὐδένα;

It’s all white washed Aunt Polly and with three coats, too!

Now see here, Tom, don’t you lie to me! I can’t bear it!

Well, look!

Nunc cavē, ō Thōmā, nē mihi mentiāris! Quod sustinēre nōn possum.

Esto, aspice!

I never! There’s no getting around it! You can work when you have a mind to! Run along and play! Virtue is its own reward!
Nōn ego umquam…Nihil contrādīcendum! Cum tibi libuit, potes labōrāre. Abī et lūde! Quod pretium rēctī.

I went swimming, I’m clean and cool!

Aunt Polly, Aunt Polly!

Natātum īvī. Mundus sum et refrigerātus!

Μātertera Miryam, mātertera Miryam!

Page 6

Aunt Polly!

Sakes alive! Don’t you worry, Sidney , dear! You can put on your Sunday suit! And wait till I get my hands on that Tom when he gets home!

Μātertera Miryam!

Per Jovem! Nōlī cūrāre, ō cāre Dionȳsī. Licet enim tibi vestītum candidum induere. Manē autem dōnec capiam Tōmān istum domum reversum.

Μὰ τὸν Δία.

Hello, Amy! Where have you been? I haven’t seen you since we got engaged!

Salvē, ō Amāta! Ubi fuistī? Nam postquam pactum nūptiāle fēcimus, tē nōn videō.

I’ve had chicken pox, but I’m all cured now!

Who’s moving across the way!

Habuī quidem pustulās, valeō autem nunc!

Quis est quī sē collocat illīc?

Τίς ἐστιν ὁ εἰσοικιζόμενος ἐκεῖ;

I heard my maw say it was a new judge!

Moving

Audīvī mammam dīcentem eum novum jūdicem esse!

Collocō

That’s their silly little girl! She’s awful! Maw sent me over to play with her, but I couldn’t! She’s too ugly! Nobody around here’s going to like her!

Er, Amy, are you sure you’re all over the chicken pox?

Why, yes! What’s the matter?

Ō Amāta, compertumne habēs tē ā pustulīs convaluisse?

Enimvērō quid negōtiī?

Ὦ Ἀγαπητή, ἆρα σαφῶς οἶσθ’ ἐκ τῶν ἐξανθημάτων ἐρρωμένη;

Καὶ γάρ τοι τί τὸ πρᾶγμα;

You look awful peaked! And what are those two pink spots on your cheek? Maybe it’s poison ivy.

Spots? Maw, maw!

Quia exīlior vidēris. Quæ sunt illæ duæ maculæ surrubræ super genā tuā? Fortasse rhūs est.

Maculæ? Mamma, mamma!

Page 7

Becky, Becky!

Coming, Mama!

Tom’s got a girl! Tom’s got a girl!

Sunday…

Rebecca, ō Rebecca!

Veniō, ō mamma!

Thōmās habet amīcam! Thōmās habet amīcam!

Diē Dominicā

There’s judge Thatcher! Hear he’s going to present the Bible to anyone who’s earned enough tickets!

Ecce jūdex Strāmentārius! Audiō eum Biblia, cuicumque sat tesserārum sibi comparāverit, dōnātūrum esse.

Bet Becky’d be proud of me if she saw her father giving me the Bible prize.
Nōnne Rebecca in mē lætētur, sī videās patrem Biblia mihi dōnantem?

Ἆρ’ οὐκ ἂν Ρεβέκκα ἥδοιτό μοι, εἰ ὁρῴη τὸν πατέρα τὰ Βιβλία μοι διδόντα;

Page 8

Fred, want the marbles back you gave me for whitewashing? I’ll give them to you for six blue and six yellow bible tickets!

You’re crazy! Give you four blue and four yellow!

Furis. Tibi dābō quattuor cæruleās et quattuor flāvās.

Hand them over! Jack, want to trade back your licorice stick for some bible tickets?

Trāde igitur! Ō Jacōbe, rūrsusne mūtābis glycyrrhīzam tuam prō aliquot tesserīs?

Παράδος οὖν. Ὦ Ιάκωβε, ἆρ’ αὖ ἀλλαγήσει τὴν γλυκύρρῑζάν σου ἀντὶ συμβόλων τινῶν;

Sure, Tom!

Can I trade to get back my dog collar?

Minutes later…

Ηercle, ō Thōmā!

Licetne mihi mūtāre ut recipiam collāre canīnum meum?

Post paulō

Ἆρ’ ἔξεστί μοι ἀλλάσσειν ἵν’ ἀναλάβω τὸν κλοιόν μου;

Attention! Attention! Today, we have a distinguished visitor, the newly-elected magistrate of our county, Judge Thatcher!

Animum attendite. Nam hodiē vir honōrātus nōs vīsit, magistrātus cīvitātis nostræ nūper ēlēctus, jūdex Tector.

Judge Thatcher, whenever one of our pupils learns two verses of scripture, he receives a blue ticket! A hundred blue tickets get him a yellow one! And ten yellow tickets bring the reward of a beautiful bible! Would you present this to Sidney Sawyer, who I believe has enough tickets?

Ō jūdex Tector, quotiēs ūnus ē discipulīs nostrīs versūs Scrīptūræ duōs discit, tesseram cæruleam accipit. Centum autem tesseræ cæruleæ præbent eī flāvam ūnam. Decem autem tesseræ flavæ dānt Biblia pulchra. Donēs ideō hæc Dionȳsiō Serrāriō, cui, putō, sat tesserārum sunt?

Ὦ κρῑτὰ Στέγον, ὅσακις εἷς τῶν ἡμετέρων μαθητῶν στίχω τῆς Γραφῆς μανθάνει, σύμβολον γλαυκὸν λαμβάνει. Ἑκατὸν δὲ σύμβολα γλαυκὰ παρέχουσιν αὐτῷ ἓν ξανθόν. Δέκα δὲ σύμβολα ξανθὰ διδόασι Βιβλία καλά. Δωρήσαιο οὖν ἂν τάδε Διονῡσίῳ Πρίστῃ ἔχοντι, οἶμαι, σύμβολα ἱκανά;

Here they are, sir!

Ecce, domine!

Seven, eight! I’m sorry, Sidney! You’ll have to wait another week! You are two tickets short!

That’s funny! I wasn’t short when I came in!

Septem, octo. Doleō, Dionȳsī. Nam opus tibi est alium diem expectāre quia duæ tesseræ tibi dēsunt.

Mīrābile audītū! Quia nōn dēerant mihi introeuntī.

I don’t suppose there is anyone else who has learned the necessary two thousand verses?

Mr. Winters I’m ready for a Bible! I’ve got enough tickets!

Numquid adest alius quis doctus duo mīlia necessāriōrum versuum?

Ō domine Hiems, parātus sum ad Biblia habēns sat tesserārum!

Μή τι πάρεστιν ἄλλος τις μεμαθηκὼς τοὺς ἐπιτηδείους δισχῑλίους στίχους;

Page 9

You have enough tickets! Well, let us see now, nine, ten! He earned the Bible, judge!
Tū habēs sat tesserārum! Esto, videāmus nunc, novem, decem! Dignus est Bibliōrum, ō jūdex!

Well, my fine little man, what is your name?

Tell the gentleman your other name, Thomas, and say sir!

Sir Thomas Sawyer!

Esto, ō pulchre juvenis, quī vocāris?

Dīc virō alterum nōmen tuum, ō Thōmā, dīcēns dominus!

Dominus Thōmās Serrārius.

Εἶεν, ὦ καλὲ νεᾱνίσκε, πῶς ὀνομάζει;

Two thousand verses is a great many! You’ll never regret having remembered them! No doubt you know all of the twelve disciples! But tell us who were the first two disciples!

Duo mīlia versuum sunt multa! Numquam vērō tē pænitēbit ēdidicisse! Sine dubiō scīs omnēs duodecim apostolōs, dīc autem nōbīs quī prīmī duo discipulī fuerint.

Answer the judge, Thomas! Don’t be afraid!

He’s frightened, poor boy! But I know he’ll tell us! Now the names of the first two disciples were…

…Adam and Eve!

Respondē jūdicī, ō Thōmā, nōlīque timēre!

Terrētur miser! Crēdō autem eum nōbīs dictūrum esse. Nam nōmina duōrum prīmōrum discipulōrum erant…

…Adam et Ēva.

Monday

Tom Sawyer, why are you late this time? Perhaps you’d like to sit with the girls?

Oh, no, Mr. Dobbins!

Diē Lūnæ

Thōmā Serrārī, nunc quārē sērō vēnistī? Fortasse tibi placuerit apud puellās sedēre?

Minimē, domine Clāre!

Θωμᾶ Πρῖστα, νῦν τί ὀψὲ ἥκεις; Τάχα ἂν ἀρέσαι σοι καθίσαι παρὰ τὰς κόρας;

Page 10

Then I trust you have a good excuse?

There’s only one empty seat among the girls.

Quidnī excūsātiō tibi sit?

Est ūna sella vacua apud puellās.

Πῶς γὰρ οὐ πρόφασίς ἐστί σοι;

Yes, I’ve a good excuse! I stopped to talk to Huck Finn!

Huckleberry Finn! Does your aunt allow you to associate with such riffraff? Of course not! Sit with the girls!

As everyone else works out a multiplication problem on their slates, Tom writes something, then covers it over so Becky can’t see it. At last, curiosity wins, she pulls his hand away.

Dum omnēs aliī multiplicātiōnēs in pugillāribus ēlabōrant, Thōmās scrīptum ab ipsō aliquid contegit nē Rebecca videat. Quæ tandem cupidior discendī facta manum ejus abstrahit.

Why, you bad thing!

I love you

See what I’ve drawn?

Mr. Dobbins

All slates in!

Ooh!

Nam tū malum!

Tē amō

Vidēsne quod dēscrīpserim?

Dom. Clārus

Reddite omnēs!

Ō!

Ἐρῶ σοῦ

Ἆρ’ ὁρᾷς τί διέγραψα;

Κῡρ.

Ὤ.

What! Who drew this? Whose slate is this? Willy Fisher? Joseph Harper?

No, sir! I didn’t draw anything.

Couldn’t be mine.

World Time

Quid? Quis hoc dēscrīpsit? Cujus pugillāris? Villelme Piscātor? Jōsēphus Fidicen?

Nihil dēscrīpsī, domine!

Nōn esset meum!

Mundī Tempus

Τί; Τίς τόδε διέγραψε; Τίνος ἡ δέλτος; Γουλιέλμε Ἁλιεῦ; Ἰωσὴφ Ψάλτα;

Page 11

Rebecca Thatcher! Look into my eyes! Did you draw this?

I did it, sir! I drew it!

Ō Rebecca Strāmentāria, aspice mē! Tūne hoc dēscrīpsistī?

Immō ego, ō domine!

Ὦ Ῥεβέκκα Ὀροφοῦσα, βλέψον εἴς με. Ἆρα σὺ διέγραψας τόδε;

Next time you will multiply, not draw!

Oww!

How could you be so noble?

Vicissim multiplicābis neque dēscrībēs!

Heu!

Quī tam fortiter tē gessistī?

Ἰοὺ ἰού.

Πῶς οὕτως ἠνδραγάθησας;

At recess…

Say, Becky, were you ever engaged?

What is that?

Exeuntibus…

Ō Rebecca, umquamne pactum nūptiāle fēcistī?

Quid hoc reī?

Ὦ Ῥεβέκκα, ἆρά ποτε ἐποιήσω ἐγγύην;

Τί τοῦτό ἐστι;

Why, engaged to be married means you could never marry anyone but me! Would you like to become engaged?

I reckon so! I don’t know! What’s it like?

Nam pactum nūptiāle significat tē nēminī nisi mihi nūptūram esse. Vīsne ergō pactum
nūptiāle facere?

Exīstimō. Nesciō. Cui hoc simile?

Ἡ γὰρ ἐγγύη σημαίνει σὲ οὐκ ἂν γαμεῖσθαί οὐδενὶ εἰ μὴ ἐμοί. Βούλει οὖν ἐγγύην ποιήσασθαι;

Δοκῶ. Οὐκ οἶδα. Τίνι τοῦθ’ ὅμοιον;

Like? Why, it isn’t like anything! Do you remember what I wrote on my slate? Well, we just say those words to each other and then we’re engaged!

Well, not now! Some other time, tomorrow!

Simile? Immō nihilō simile! Meministīne quæ in pugillāre scrīpserim? Quibus vērō inter nōs dictīs, fit pactum nūptiāle nostrum!

Licet, nōn nunc sed aliō diē, crās!

Page 12

Please, Becky! I’ll whisper! I’ll whisper it ever so easily! I love you! Now you whisper it!

Turn your face away so you can’t see!

Οbsecrō, ō Rebecca! Ego quidem lēnissimē susurrābō: tē amō. Tū autem nunc susurrā!

Āverte vīsum nē aspiciās!

I love you.

Tē amō

Ἐρῶ σοῦ.

Now it’s all over but the kiss!

Don’t be afraid, Becky! It’s nothing, see!

I never heard of being engaged! It’s so nice!

Nunc omnia ācta sunt præter ōsculum!

Nōlī timēre, Rebecca! Ecce, nihil est!

Numquam dē pactō nuptiālī audīvī! Quam suāve!

Ὡς ἡδύ.

It’s ever so gay! When Amy Lawrence and I were engaged…

Amy Lawrence! Then I’m not the first girl you’ve ever been engaged to!

Don’t cry, Becky! It was a whole month ago! Look! I’ll give you this brass door knocker!

Sob! Go away!

Nōlī flēre, Rebecca! Jam abhinc diēbus trīgintā factum est! Aspice! Dabō tibi mārculum æneum hunc!

[Singultus] Abī!

Here, Becky! Take it! It’s the best treasure I’ve got!

Eeek!

Ecce, Rebecca, accipe rem meam pretiōsissimam!

Attat!

Page 13

Becky!

Hello, Huck! What’s a dead cat good for?

Rebecca!

Avē, ō Bacche! Ad quam rem fēles mortua bona?

Χαῖρε, ὦ Βάκχε. Πρὸς τί αἴλουρος νεκρὸς χρηστός;

To cure warts with!

To cure warts? You sure?

Ad verrūcās cūrandās!

Num ad verrūcās cūrandās?

Μῶν πρὸς ἰᾶσθαι τὰς μυρμηκιάς;

You take your cat at midnight to a graveyard where somebody wicked’s been buried. When the devil comes to take the fellow way, you heave your cat after him and say “cat follow the devil, warts follow the cat, I’m done with you!”

Mediā nocte fers fēlem in sepulcrētum ubi homō nēquam sepultus est. Cum diabolus vēnerit ut auferat eum, fēlem tollēns, “ō fēles,” ais, “sequere diabolum, ō verrūcæ, sequiminī fēlem, nam rem vōbīscum habuī!”

When are you going to try it?

They’re burying old Hoss Williams today, and he’s the wickedest man in these parts since they ran my paw out of town! I reckon the devil ‘ll come after him tonight! Want to go to the graveyard, or are you afraid?

Quandō hoc tentābis?

Hodiē sepeliunt senem Horātium Villelmī, hominem hīc nēquissimum ex eō pappam meum ab urbe expulērunt. Cēnseō diabolum eum vesperī persecūtūrum esse. Utrum ad sepulcrētum ībis an timēs?

Πότε πειράσῃ τούτου;

Σήμερον θάπτουσιν Ὁράτιον [ᾱ] Γουλιέλμου τὸν γέροντα, τὸν ἐνταῦθα πονηρότατον ἐξ οὗ ἐξήλασαν τὸν πάππαν μου ἐκ τῆς πόλεως. Δοκῶ δὲ τὸν διάβολον καθ’ ἑσπέραν μετιέναι αὐτόν. Πότερον εἰς τὸ κοιμητήριον εἶ ἢ φοβεῖ;

Who’s afraid?

Well, I’m going fishing! I guess you’d better be getting back to school! I’ll mew for you at midnight!

Ecquis timet?

Bene, ego abeō piscātum. Melius vērō tē ad lūdum redīre. Mediā autem nocte ad tē sībilābō.

Ἦ τίς φοβεῖται;

That night!

Meow! Meow! Meow!

Huck’s waiting.

Illā nocte

[Sībilus]

Bacchus exspectat.

Page 14
Took you long enough!

Let’s go, Huck!

Soon…

Satis diū morātus es!

Eāmus, ō Bacche!

Brevī…

Listen, Tom! Someone’s coming! Must be the devil, for Hoss Williams’ soul! Can you pray?

I’ll try! “Now I lay me down to sleep”

Audī, ō Thōmā! Venit aliquis. Nōnne diabolus post animam Horātiī Villelmī? Potesne precārī?

Cōnābor! In pāce in idipsum dormiam…

Ἄκουσον, ὦ Θωμᾶ. Ἔρχεταί τις. Πῶς οὐχ ὁ διάβολος ὁ μετὰ τῆν ψῡχὴν Ὁρᾱτίου Γουλιέλμου; Ἔχεις εὐχεσθαι;

Look! Why, they aren’t devils! That’s Muff Potter!

Drunk again! And Doctor Robinson and Injun Joe with him! Wonder what they’re arguing about!

Aspice!

Ἴδε.

Ὃς πάλιν μεθύει καὶ ἰᾱτρὸς ὁ Ῥωβέρτου καὶ Ἰωσὴφ ὁ Ἰνδὸς μετ’ αὐτοῦ. Περὶ δὴ τίνος τραχέως διαλέγονται;

Wish we could hear ‘em! Sure seems like a powerful ruckus!

Utinam audīrēmus eōs! Etenim vidētur magnus tumultus esse!

Doc. Robinson’s a fool to cross Injun Joe!

Glory, Tom! The Doc flattened Indian Joe with just one punch!

Per Jovem, ō Thōmā! Medicus ictū ūnō dējēcit Jōsēphum Indum.

Page 15

Now Muff’s trying to square things for Injun Joe!

Nunc Matthæus ratiōnem prō Jōsēphō Indō reddere cōnātur!

The way Muff always wobbles around town, he won’t be standing long!

Matthæus, quī circā urbem semper titubat, nōn diū stābit.

That doc sure is a wildcat!

Ow!

Tom, did you see that?

Hercle, ille medicus leō ‘st!

Ō!

Ō Thōmā, vīdistīne?

Ὤ.

Ὦ Θωμᾶ, ἆρ’ εἶδες;

Poor Doc Robinson is dead and Injun Joe killed him, but he put the knife in Muff’s hand.

Miser medicus dē Rōbertō mortuus est, Jōsēphus Indus autem eum occīdit, sīcā in manū Matthæī positā.

Page 16

A minute later, Muff Potter comes to…

Post paulō venit Matthæus Figulus ut…

I’d no business drinking tonight! I’m all in a muddle! Tell me, Joe, honest, old fellow, did I do that?

Nōn decuit mē hāc nocte bibere! Nam turbātus sum! Cēdō, ō bone Jōsēphe, fēcīne ego istud?

Yes, Muff, come on! You got to get out of here!

Upon my word, I never meant to do it!

Fēcistī, Matthæe. Agedum! Tibi abeundum est!

Dō fidem mē numquam hoc voluisse!

Ἄγε δή.

He fetched you one, and then you came up with your knife!

You won’t tell, will you, Joe?

Iste tē percussit, tū autem habēns sīcam surrēxistī!

Numquid hoc nārrābis, ō Jōsēphe?

Μήτι ἐρεῖς τοῦτο, ὦ Ιωσήφ;

No, you’ve always been fair and square with me! I won’t tell anyone about this! Now move! You don’t want to be around when they find Doc. Robinson!

Nōn. Nam æquus et honestus mihi semper fuistī! Nēminī ergō istud nārrābō. Abī nunc! Nē adsīs cum medicum dē Rōbertō invēnerint!

Huck, do you suppose we ought to tell anybody?

Do you want to get us killed? Why, that devil Injun Joe wouldn’t make any more of drowning us than a couple of cats if we were to tell on him!

Ō Bacche, putāsne hoc nōbīs dīcendum alicui?

Numquid vīs nōs interficī? Nam improbissimus Jōsēphus Indus nōn plūris faceret nōs quam pār fēlium mergere, sī eum dēferrēmus!

Ὦ Βάκχε, ἆρ’ οἴει χρῆν ἡμᾶς λέγειν τοῦτό τινι;

Look here, Huck, let’s swear to keep mum..

Nunc audī, ō Bacche, jūrēmus nōs tacītūrōs esse…

And if we don’t keep mum, may we drop dead in our tracks and rot!

Et nisi tecuerimus, dēmortuī in viā tābēscāmus!

A few days later…

Nōn multīs diēbus post…

Aunt Polly, Tom was talking so much in his sleep again last night, he kept me awake half the night!

Mātertera Miryām, Thōmās dormiēns heri iterum tantum loquēbātur ut īnsomniam mihi per dīmidiam noctem præbēret.

I don’t know what ails him, but I know what’ll cure it, painkiller!

Page 17

I don’t need any!

A double dose is what you need right now! Open your mouth!

Nūllō indigeō!

Sed nunc tamen duplicī indigēs! Aperī ōs!

Aunt Polly, he talked about such crazy stuff in his sleep! Kept saying over and over again, “I won’t tell!” tell what?

O!

Ō mātertera Miryam, quōmodo iste dormiēns nūgās loquēbātur! Quī enim iterum iterumque dīcēbat: nōn nārrābō! Quid vērō?

Ō!

Ὦ θεία Μαριάμ, πῶς οὗτος ἐλήρει καθεύδων. Ὃς γὰρ αὖθις καὶ μάλα ἔλεγεν · οὐ διηγήσομαι. Τί δή;

Ὤ.

Now get your breath and then you can take this other spoonful! Be sure and take it!

Take it!

Nunc autem respīrāns sūmēs hoc alterum cochleāre! Cūrā ut sūmās!

Ut sūmās!

No , Peter, don’t ask for it unless you really want it! Well, all right, but if you don’t like it, you’ve only yourself to blame!

Tom! What ails the cat?

Cats always act like that when they’re having a good time!

Ō Thōmā, quid fēlēs patitur?

Sīc semper faciunt fēlēs gaudentēs.

Ὦ Θωμᾶ, τί ὁ αἴλουρος πάσχει;

Soon…

Mox autem…

Ow! You don’t whack Sid when he takes sugar!

Well, Sid doesn’t torment a body the way you do!

Heu! Dionȳsium nōn verberās, cum saccharon abstulerit!

Neque tam ēnecat quemquam Dionȳsius quam tū!

Ἰού.

Page 18

Oh, Tom! My good dish!

Aunt Polly, don’t punish Tom! Sid did it!

Ō Thōmā, pulchram patinam meam!

Mātertera Miryām, nōlī Thōmān pūnīre! Nam Dionȳsius culpandus!

Well, he didn’t get a lick amiss, I reckon! He’s been in plenty of audacious mischief that’s gone unpunished, anyway!
Nōn vāpulāvit perperam, meā sententiā! Quī etiam facinora audāciæ plūrima impūnītē fēcit!

Hello, Joe! If I was to drown, then I’d bet my aunt Polly’d be sorry!
Salvē, ō Jōsēph. Sī submergar, tunc vērō mātertera mea Miryām tristētur.

You having trouble too? I had to wear these shoes or my ma would’ve whacked me!

Burning you out with painkiller! Squeezing your feet with shoes! It’s enough to make anybody run away!
Hæc indolōrī mē concremat, illa pedēs tuōs calceāmentīs premit. Itaque quīvīs abigitur.

I’d just as soon do that!
Hoc potius faciam!

You would? Why we could go all over the world! Huck Finn would join us! We could use his raft and become pirates! We’ll set sail at midnight, if you really want to run away!
Itane? Etenim eāmus per tōtum mundum! Bacchus Finnus nōs assequātur, ipsī autem
rate ejus ūtentēs pīrātæ fīāmus! Mediā enim nocte solvēmus, sī vērō fugere vīs!

I’ll be there, Tom! Be sure to bring food!

The next day…

Aderō, ō Thōmā! Cūrā ut cibum ferās!

Postrīdiē…

I’m captain Murrell, the one-eyed buccaneer of the Mississippi and if you don’t dig for treasure, that’s mutiny!
Ego sum nauclērus Maurīlius, luscus pīrāta Mississippiī. Tū autem nisi thēsaurum effōderis, nōnne sēditiōsus?

Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ναύκληρος Μαυρῑλιος, ὁ μονόφθαλμος λῃστὴς τοῦ Μισσισσιπποῦ. Σὺ δ’ ἐὰν μὴ τὸν θησαυρὸν ἀνασκάψῃς, πῶς οὐ στασιωτικός;

Aw, I’ve walked the plank ten times already! I’m sick of committing mutiny!
Ō, jam deciēs per tabulam nāvis ambulāvī! Ideō mē tædet sēditiōnum!

Hi bedwere,

Just a few thoughts. As always, they are for what they’re worth :slight_smile::

Oh, Tom! My good dish!
Ō Thōmā, pulchra patina mea!

Maybe > pulchram patinam meam> ?

Hello, Joe! If I was to drown, then I’d bet my aunt Polly’d be sorry!
Salvē, ō Jōsēph. Sī submergar, tunc vērō mātertera mea Miryām tristētur.

Is the Present Subjunctive the same as “if i was…i’d bet…”? I’d expect the Imperfect Subj.
The “I’d bet” part is missing in the translation. Maybe something like > Censeo materteram…> ?

You having trouble too? I had to wear these shoes or my ma would’ve whacked me!

I’m not sure about the use of > aut > here. Maybe > sin aliter > or the like> ?

I’m captain Murrell, the one-eyed buccaneer of the Mississippi and if you don’t dig for treasure, that’s mutiny!
Ego sum nauclērus Maurilius, luscus pīrāta Mississippiī. Tū autem nisi thēsaurum effōderis, nōnne sēditiō?

Not really important but I’d prefer having something like > seditiosus > at the end, to keep the subjects identical in both parts of the sentence.

Hi, Shenoute! Thank you!

I switched to the accusative.

The present subjunctive is used for improbable but not impossible future events. See, for example A Parallel Of Greek And Latin Syntax 398
My intention was to translate the “I bet” idiom with a “vērō”.
I chose “aut” because of what Smith has for “or

Sometimes aut = or else; when a sudden turn is given to the discourse: cf. Cic. de Or. 2, 2, 5, omnia … bene ei sunt dicenda, qui hoc se posse profitetur, aut eloquentiae nomen relinquendum est, or else he must abandon, etc.

I switched to sēditiōsus

Thanks for the additional comments and references!
