I find translations very helpful, and use the Loeb books for that very reason. The baffling sentences I go through, matching the English phrase by phrase, with the Greek (or Latin) words. Here are some of the things I find: unexpected secondary meanings, misunderstood pronouns especially relative pronouns, unguessed lemma, unexpected hyperbaton, unexpected complements of verbs, unexpected uses of the inflections, failure to see how the unfamiliar word order generates meaning, and written words that differ only in accentuation.
For me, reading without a translation handy is a goal to strive for, and a test of mastery, rather than a means by which the learner achieves mastery.
Dictionary work can be annoying, not just for the time it takes, but also for the bafflement that occurs as you try to match up a given word with a long list of alternative meanings.
I understand that materials meant for classroom work must meet different expectations, because teachers must evaluate student progress, but I’m speaking as an autodidact.
