3rd Hellenikon Idyllion Winter School in Ancient Greek

The Hellenikon Idyllion Winter School is an intensive seminar in spoken Ancient Greek, aimed at improving and deepening participants’ linguistic skills in the language.
Course information:
The seminar will run for 1 week, with 2 x 2 hr sessions a day (Monday-Friday, 11-13 and 17-
19). The sessions consist of reading and discussing an Ancient Greek text together, using Ancient Greek as the vehicular language. The theme of the readings will be Peace, as it is described or discussed in select Ancient Greek texts (Aristophanes, Herodotus, Plato, Xenophon and others). The discussions will regard the philological, linguistic, and historical aspects of the text. The seminar will be led by Federico Aurora (University of Oslo).
Participation:
The seminar is aimed at students and teachers, but open to anyone with some previous knowledge of Ancient Greek. It is not necessary to have spoken Ancient Greek previously to participate in the seminar.
Location:
The Hellenikon Idyllion is a cultural centre situated in the village of Selianitika on the northwest coast of the Peloponnese, between Patras and Aegion, and directly on Gulf of Corinth. The centre is located in a garden covered by grape pergolas and 10 meters from the beach.

Κατεχόμενος ἤδη τῆν γῆν τοῦ χειμῶνος ἁθροίσονται φίλαι τε καὶ φίλοι τινές φιλέλληνες ἐν τῷ καλουμένῳ κήπῳ τῶν Μουσῶν ὡς συναττικίσουσαι/συναττικίσοντες. οὗτος δὲ ὁ κῆπος, μέγας καὶ ἐπίσκιος καὶ παραθαλάττιος ὤν, εὑρίσκεται ἐν τῷ Ἑλληνικῷ Εἰδυλλίῳ. κάλλιστοι δὲ δήπου ἔσονται οἱ διάλογοι πολλῶν γε καὶ ἄλλων φιλελλήνων μετεχουσῶν/μετεχόντων. παρακαλοῦμεν οὖν πάσας καὶ πάντας ὑμᾶς ἐκ πάσης τῆς οἰκουμένης, ὅσαι/ὅσοι χαίρετε τῇ τῶν ἀρχαίων σοφίᾳ καὶ τοῖς λόγοις αὐτῶν, προσελθοῦσαι/προσελθόντες συνδιαλέγεσθαι ἡμῖν.
Ποία δὲ γενήσεται ἡ συνουσία; δίς τοι τῆς ἡμέρας ἐν τόπῳ χαρίεντι συλλεχθεῖσαι/συλλεχθέντες ἀναγιγνώσκομεν γράμματα ἀξιώτατα τῶν ἀρχαίων, ἐξηγούμεναι/μενοι αὐτὰ κατὰ τὸ ἔθος τῶν φιλολόγων καὶ περὶ τῶν νοημάτων αὐτῶν φιλοσοφούμεναι/μενοι. οὐδεμίᾳ/οὐδενὶ δὲ ἀνάγκη ἔσται ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἀττικιστὶ ὥσπερ Γοργίας μακροὺς λόγους προφέρειν. ἔξεστι γὰρ πάσῃ/παντὶ τὸ μὲν πρῶτον μόνον ἀκροατῇ εἶναι. ταχέως δὲ ὄψεσθε ὡς ῥᾳδίως τῇ τῶν ἀρχαίων Ἑλλήνων φωνῇ χρωμέναι/χρῶμενοι διαλεξόμεθα. Μελέτη γὰρ τὸ πᾶν, ὥς φησι ὁ Περίανδρος.
Ἡ δὲ ἐν τῷ Ἑλληνικῷ Εἰδυλλίῳ διαγωγὴ οὐ μόνον ἐκ διαλόγων σύγκειται, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἄλλα γένοιτο ἄν πολλά. Πολλάκις γὰρ μουσικοί τε καὶ ἄλλοι τινὲς παιδείαν τιμῶντες ἐν τῷ Ἑλληνικῷ Εἰδυλλίῳ διατρίβουσιν, ὥστε συναυλίαι τε καὶ ἀκροάσεις γίγνεσθαι φιλοῦσι.

The anthology of texts will be sent in advance to participants.
