why not use cambridge latin course?

after reading through these forums quite a bit, it seems to me that there are two main books that people here use to learn latin: wheelock’s and lingua latina–three if you count d’ooge.

why isn’t there such a strong following for the cambridge latin course? i’ve sped through a couple stages and it seems to me that you get the best of what both wheelock’s and LL have to offer. that is, a heavy emphasis on reading and a progressive story, but also sections that describe the grammar.

so, why not study with the cambridge latin course? i’m curious.

I use the Cambridge one in conjuntion with Wheelock… that way I get the grammar side and the reading side.

i’ve been having a hard time of choosing a book/course and sticking with it. so far, i feel i’ve learned the most from cambridge–not only about the language, but also about the culture and history.

i understand the merits of working both with wheelock’s and cambridge, but i’m not sure how to blend the two courses together… any suggestions?

From a user of lingua latina’s point of view, the Cambridge course seems a slower moving. I used to use D’ooge too, and got the basic uses of the cases and the conjugations up to the perfect passive from him before going on to Lingua Latina but even he seems faster than Cambridge, The one upside of the Cambridge course is that it provides much cultural information.

i think i might stick with the cambridge latin course. i’m having fun with it and i feel like i’m learning a lot relatively fast. in fact, i just finished up the first book after about a week and am soon to start the second unit.

i hear what you’re saying about the culture information–i think it’s one of the reasons why i like the course so much.
