Unit 5 Reading Sentence 10

“Auxilium caris a dis dandum est,” sensit;
is translated by the posted answer key on this forum as
"They felt … "
but isin’t the verb “sensit” singular? Shouldn’t the Latin be “senserunt” to be translated as “they felt”? What am I missing?
Thanks in advance!

“sensit” agrees with the singular “populus socius” in the prior sentence. But whether one translates “populus socius” with the plural “allies” (cleanest) or as “allied people” (which is singular, but a collection of many) the English translation for “sensit” has to be the plural “they felt” to be grammatical in English terms.
