Understanding the rules for accents

Hello,

I learned Greek using the G/T method and accents were basically ignored. I’m teaching my son using a more conversational method (the BLC material) and today I was trying to illustrate a simple grammar rule, so I wrote out a few sentences (I realized that this was my first time composing Greek, it had never been asked of me before) and I had no clue what the accents were.

Is there a resource that can help me understand the accenting rules? Or do I need to memorize them as if they were part of the spelling?

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi! Here’s a quick and helpful intro:

https://antigonejournal.com/2021/06/greek-accents-ten-rules/

It’s a mixture of

  1. rules (the linked article above starts you off),
  2. patterns (e.g. certain types of word have their accent at predictable spots), and then
  3. an unavoidable residue of brute memorisation (when no rule or pattern applies).

Cheers, Chad

What a great guide. Thank you so much for your help!
