Trouble with Young's edition of Theognis

So, while reading Young’s edition of Theognis I came upon a couple of references I’ve been unable to track.

  1. On his apparatus Young quotes a correction of Semonides 7.27 and attributes it to Wilamowitz.

I’ve not been able to locate this particular edition of Bergk’s Poetae Lyrici Graeci with Wilamowitz’s notes on it. Any help locating it would be very appreciated.

It’s also interesting that on his apparatus to Semonides West makes no mention of Wilamowitz, just of Schneidewin.

  1. On that same edition Young references a certain Buttmann.

This time a little West was more helpful in finding this Buttmann (pun intended).

But, alas, all the editions online I’ve found of Buttmann’s grammar have no mention of that correction. And they all seem to vary a lot in content and layout according to the edition. Does anyone have an idea of what edition West meant?

According to Young’s Latin description, the Wilamowitz reference seems to be to a hand-written note in Wilamowitz’s personal copy of Bergk’s 3rd edition, which is presumably held somewhere in a Wilamowitz archive–I would guess somewhere in Berlin. It’s probably not published anywhere. Young was nothing if not thorough–West describes him as an indefessus indagator.

I don’t have any help on 104. But you would apparently have to look in a two-volume edition. Given the mss. readings, Buttmann’s conjecture, which both Young and West accept (or μεταδουν’ suggested by West) is almost certainly right, isn’t it?

West has mistaken his reference. See Buttmann’s Ausführliche griechische Sprachlehre, vol. 2. Here is the page.

Thank you both very much for your help.

Happy Holidays!

West’s noluit is significant. Priority goes to who first thought of it even if he rejected it.
Seems West was even more of an indefessus indagator than Douglas Young.
