Translating adversative "while"

Does anyone know how to translate while as it appears in the following sentence:

But emission nebula NGC 3576 lies only 9,000 light-years from Earth, while star cluster NGC 3603 resides 20,000 light-years away.

When I hear “while” I immediately think of dum. However, dum seems to have a mostly temporal significance while (no pun intended) “while” has an adversative tinge. But I feel uncomfortable about using cum-adversative in this case. Merriam-Webster gives “whereas” as an alternative for this sense of “while”. But when I look up “whereas” in Cassell’s dictionary, it lists words like quoniam, quod, quando, cum. None of these really seems to fit the bill.

Can anyone help me?

Bedwere is exactly right. This isn’t really adversative. It’s "on the one hand . . . on the other . . . "
