επεστη

M. Unit 27, exercise I.6.
Render into Greek:
Turning about, the army came to a halt.
Answer key: στρεφομενον το στρατευμα επεστη.

Where does επεστη come from? I can’t recognize the person, the number, the tense and the voice! The ending seems to be for the 2nd person singular present middle. But it should be the third person (i.e., “the army”) and I don’t recognize it as any tense of the verb παυω, which, BTW, is not presented to the student until unit 28.

Something’s wrong. Usually me.

Thanks to all.

στη (in other forms στα) is a clue. 2nd aorist of ἵστημι is ἔστην.

Hi

If you look back at page 195 unit 23 you will see a list of principal parts for ἵστημι and ἐφίστημι, which will be helpful revision.

Also ἐπέστη figures in the exercise p 203 unit 24 no. 38.

Its easy to forget these things…

Thank you both, Jeidsath and Seneca.
Problem solved. Units 23 & 24 are the ones i have had the most trouble with so far.
