Thucydides, H. D. Cameron commentary for students

H. D. Cameron, Thucydides Book I: A Students’ Grammatical Commentary (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, c. 2003)

I’m finding Cameron very helpful, especially in giving grammatical information on words and phrases I had read intuitively. I ordered the book when I decided to tackle Thucydides. By the time the book arrived, I was up to Book I, Ch. v. Upon comparing my notes on this difficult passage with Cameron’s meticulous comments, I realized that my intuitive reading strayed some distance away from a precise understanding. My understanding was fairly correct, but I could not have passed a quiz on the grammatical particularities.

So, I flipped back to the beginning, opened a new notebook, and started over. Already, after an hour’s work, I’m glad I did.

Cameron, while teaching Thucydides Book I to American seniors and graduate students at the University of Michigan, prepared grammar notes for them, which notes, he says, evolved eventually into this book.
