Hi all,

Has anyone ever tried to read the Greek from the Rosetta Stone? If you have, what dialect of Greek is used?

They managed to decipher hieroglyphics because they could read the Greek on the Rosetta stone (since the Greek told them what was said they could break the code). And, judging by the time period, I presume it was in Koine (aka New Testament) Greek.

As GGG said it’s probably koine: the stone was inscribed in 196 BC. There are three different scripts: hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek.

Are you reading from a photograph or are you reading some edited version? :slight_smile:

I have a very high quality image of the rosetta stone that you can zoom waaaaay up to. The Greek is perfectly readable, written in scripta contiua as were most Greek writings of the day. It’s really quite neat. Briefly looking around I couldn’t find it in as high of a quality image as I have. I would post it somewhere for y’all to look at…but I don’t have anywhere I can post a 3MB image. If someone has a spot I could send it to where they could post it (it is 1575X2135) I would love to share.

I think I have the same file on my disco rigido. Maybe I could send it to anybody wanting it, via email. Or I could send one a TIFF’ed version, enlarged 200%, negative, and dithered. slightly over 1MB.

Coming out of the blue (sorry!), but I’m just really curious… why did you say “disco rigido”? Any particular reason?

Is the Greek text available anyplace – I mean, transcribed into a modern Greek font, with space characters and diacritics?

The fist line seems to be: [size=150]βασιλευοντος του νεου και παραλαβοντος την βασιλειαν παρα του πατρος κουριου βασιλειων μεγαλοδοξου[/size]… I can’t make it out easily.
