The gender of the third declension nouns

These rules might have already been posted in this forum. However, if not, I hope this can help a little bit. I am not sure how good these rules are but so far I found few exceptions to them.

  1. Nouns naming individual males are masculine.
  2. Nouns naming individual females are feminine.
  3. Nouns ending in -os, -nis, -guis and -cis are masculine.
  4. Nouns ending in -es (gen. -itis) and -ex (gen. icis) are masculine.
  5. Nouns ending in -us (gen. -ris) are neutral.
  6. Nouns ending in -er and -or (ERROR) are masculine.
  7. Nouns ending in -s, -o and -x (SOX) are feminine.
  8. Nouns ending in -l, -a, -n, -c, -e and -t (LANCET) are neutral.

The rules of preceding numbers take precedence over the ones of latter.
