(If this post is doing something improperly, please correct me; apologies in advance.)
My friend is doing a PhD in classics, and has not taken any Latin courses since the very beginning of his MA. He has told me he struggled immensely with the introduction/foundational lessons and barely scraped by. I assumed that, since requirements for degree programs have changed, he would not need it.
However, last time we met, he stated that he is trying to cram bits of Latin and Greek. I could tell he is really worried, and seemed to hit a wall. His birthday is around the corner, and I figured I should get him a textbook suitable for his needs.
Is there a suitable textbook for such a person? He joked, when he started his PhD about how he did not need to read a single word of Latin or Greek at all in academia, except for that exam which he flunked, but has privately told me he is really quite embarrassed to ask his supervisor and lecturers for help.
(I am just a dabbler and know nothing about these subjects, so I am very sorry if I am asking a repetitive question— all Google searches are for people who are a ‘blank slate’, children, or undergraduates attending a university class— very much not a postgraduate in distress.)
