Just got the PM myself. Having run a message board myself in the past I can say these bots are really annoying to users as well as the admins.

Bots can sign up and send PM’s? That seems pretty sophisticated! I thought their functions were less complex.

Auberon, when one uses a popular piece of software, such as this forum software (phpBB), the predictability of how a site is laid out makes it easier to program more sophisticated abuses.
I’m pestering Jeff to add a bunch of new board moderators. First, because most of the old set have disappeared — new blood’s a good idea in any case. And second, of course, to give a little better coverage to handle the spammers.
Whence will he get new moderators?
I have recommended about 10 people who have (1) been here a while, (2) are still seen regularly and (3) seem sensible, and a few others whom I see somewhat less often, or whom I have reason to believe might be strapped for time, but might still make good mods. Once people have been contacted and consented to be mods, I’ll be retiring my moderatorship.
You mean Jeff’s a real person? I just had two emails bounce back from him, and I recall never receiving any of my PM’s to him returned. That was while I was still active.
