Did anyone catch that NOVA program last night about the Parthenon? I did, it was a real treat!
I believe there’s a repeat on Sundays, so check your local listings. If you want to watch it online, go here http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/parthenon/program.html (Sadly only the Americans can watch it online )
Edit: you can always use a US proxy, though.
Share some of those secrets with us! I’m right across the street from a full-scale replica of the thing, so it can cure me of cancer or at least put me in good standing with the gods somehow I need to know.
I caught half of it and it was amazing. From what I could tell they are rebuilding parts of the structure where there is missing marble. I saw the part where they were trying to fit a drum section back together with both an original piece and a modern marble replica of the missing section.
Well, if you scream “bloody Atheeny” three times inside the Parthenon at midnight, Athena herself will appear to you and grant you 3 wishes!
They’be been at rebuilding it since I think 1983 (it took the ancients 15 years to build it in the first place), the Greeks are very keen on rebuilding ancient sites (without too much respect to the ruins, cf. Epidauros), and it’s a great big mess to walk the Akropolis, much of the ancient and holy air is gone with the thousands of tourists, the hordes of builders and the temples covered with scaffolding. The Erekhteion is about the only thing worth looking at there and also, if you confer Pausanias’ guide to Greece, the most exciting, mythologically at least.
Give me Delphi, the very nicest place on Earth, and tell me some secrets about that rather!
Are you kidding? American Idol was on at the same time!
