Greetings,
I have just created my account and wish to introduce myself. I am a native of that island which, according to legend, was tamed and civilised by Brutus of Troy.
During the first COVID lockdown I, like so many others, was compelled to spend a considerable length of time at home. In order to dispel the boredom threatened by long days spent indoors, and to maintain my cognitive acuity, I decided to learn Classical Latin. It rapidly became my greatest passion and, three years thenceforth, I have acquired through my studies such a proficiency as enables me (with a good dictionary) to read original Latin texts. I have slowly worked through a Latin-English dual language edition of Caesar’s De Bello Gallico, and am now approaching the end of the first book of Seneca’s Epistulae Morales Ad Lucilium.
I have registered because, although I sometimes require help with Latin grammar and idioms, what typically confounds me is the large number of potential definitions attached to so many Latin words; it oft appears as though a sentence could have dozens of viable translations, and I do not always settle on the correct one.
Anyway, I seem to be rambling, so let me conclude. My wish is to make contributions here; my hope is that they will be useful; my fear is that they will be useless. I remain a mere student, but a determined one!
