roma aeterna

hi textkit friends
i am currently working through roma aeterna with a friend (a language parent). we are finishing ch39 at present and have met some what of a wall. would any one know how we might work up our grammar a vocabulary to tackle the more unadapted chapters of orbergs excellent book.
i was thinking of adler (via evan milner) for the grammar. would there be any english translation of this book which would help with the vocabulary, quizlet also has flash cards (there are 102 for ch 40 roma aeterna).
finally does any one know anything about VSI (verum sapientia institute) in the states. would they recommend it and how much it costs. it seems to be a favourite site with seminariens.
thanks for your help.

First, congratulations on making it this far. If it’s any consolation, most students starting out with RA hit this wall.

My advice would be to continue your work on RA, taking as much time as you need to understand everything and rereading each chapter multiple times until it’s firmly rooted in your mind and presents no difficulties in terms of grammar, comprehension, etc.

It may feel like a hard slog at times, so be sure to supplement RA by reading other things as you work your way through the book. Here’s a list to get you started:

I would just stress that rereading is key – reread everything at least once, and preferably a day later.

thanks truks
there is plenty of variety in all the resourses you mentioned.

The institute you’re asking about—not verum sapientia (“truth is wisdom”?) but veterum sapientia (“the wisdom of oldsters”)—is very strongly Catholic. It claims to be run by “Latinists with hearts for the Church” and to be “faithful to the Magisterium.” Their website gives details of costs.

bedwere probably knows more than me, but it may not be his brand of Catholicism. Religion, like politics, tends to schism.

As a motto I personally prefer your verum sapientia.

Less enlightened people think that “Catholic” is an adjective like “pregnant”, which does not admit of comparative or superlative.
Anyway, I was involved with them in the pre-Covid era. I went first as a student and was later invited by Dr. Nancy Llewellyn to serve as assistant in the Vinculum program for the laity. I personally met quite a few of the teachers and found them excellent. I highly recommend the institute. The price is not cheap, but you get what you paid for.

Small world. Nancy Llewellyn was a student of mine for a while. I know she speaks Latin better than I can. I have no experience of the Institute.

The publisher offers a Companion book to Roma Aeterna, which I found useful for sticky grammar and usage issues.
