Resources on Greek Vases?

Hi all,

I am looking for information on a particular Greek vase:

http://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/museum/rf.jpg

It is a stamnos, ca. 475 BC, obviously featuring a killing. Would anyone know where I could find more information on it?

Links, books, articles, resources on art in general?

Thanks.

I recognised the image as Harmodios and Aristogeiton . the vase is listed and shown in the Perseus catalogue as Wurzburg L515. Let me know if you have trouble finding it or want any further info . Philip

Thanks a lot for your reply, Phil. Very helpful, indeed.

I just wonder how it is determined who the persons are. Is it because of the weapons used or something?

Further, I am bit puzzled about Perseus attributing it to the “Copenhagen Painter”

Though the pose of the figures does not resemble the famous Critius and Nesiotes sculpture , the iconography is similar . When I saw the image of an older bearded man and his younger beardless lover stab a rich man in formal robes it seemed the most obvious attribution . In the vase image there is no suggestion of anything mythical , legendary or ritualistic ,so it definitely looks like a contemporary murder .
As I recall the story it wasn’t as noble as the Athenians would like to portray it . Firstly It wasn’t an act of selfless freedom fighters but homosexual jealousy , secondly they killed the wrong man and thirdly did not free the Athenians from the tyranny and may even have made it worse until it was overthrown 3 years later . I may be wrong though , I cant remember where I read about this .
The ‘Copenhagen painter’ is presumably named from a work in the Copenhagen Museum . There seems to be dispute as to the identities of individual vase painters , according to my book on Athenian Red Figure Vases he is linked with the Syriskos painter , they may have been related or belonged to the same workshop .That is about all it says .
