Recommendations for Readers

Salvete! The past semester in university my class studied “An Apuleius Reader: Selections from the Metamorphoses,” edited by Ellen D. Finkelpearl, and I really enjoyed it as a first foray into “real” Latin literature after the completion of Wheelock.

Over the summer I picked up Victoria E. Pagán’s Sallust reader, and I was shocked by how much more detailed the notes were! Because I am still not unfailingly confident in my Latin as I have much to learn yet, I appreciated Pagán’s attention to detail as it allowed me to be confident my own translations/interpretations were correct.

My question is: do you have any recommendations of readers that you found to be particularly helpful or illuminating? I know I can’t use them forever, but when I’m doing independent/extracurricular reading that won’t be graded I like being able to check my interpretations and understanding of the work I’m reading.

Thank you in advance for your time!

Legentibus by Daniel Pettersson and many reading from Easy to “real Latin”, many you can push a button and turn into interlinear. Most have grammar notes also. You can listen to them as audio only for when you are walking or driving, or you can read along as Daniel reads them, or you can just read it alone. It has Lingua Latina per se illustrata, Daniel’s pronunciation is beautiful. You can find Legentibus in the App Store, there are other ways to get it if you don’t have an iPad or iPhone. Well worth checking out. Jim
