raro / rare ?

Are both ‘raro’ and ‘rare’ adverbs and do they mean the same thing?

ergo: raro / rare, rarius, rarissime

L&S & OLD both say they can be synonyms. // proxima synonyma secundum L&S et OLD

OLD:
rārō (adv.): rarely, seldom; unusually
rārē (adv.): (“not admitted as adv. by Varro in Gel.2.25.8”) at wide intervals, sparsely, loosely; rarely, seldom
