How do Greek writers quote their own language? If a grammarian wanted to say something like ‘Euripides wrote πόνον, not φόνον’, would they indicate the quotation in any way, e.g. an article like τὸ πόνον? Would modern editors add quotation marks? How could they distinguish between an accusative noun being quoted, vs an actual accusative noun? Couldn’t something like Εὐριπίδης ἔγραψε λόγον be read as meaning either of ‘Euripides wrote [the word] λόγον’ or ‘Euripides wrote a story’?
You guessed right. Greek would use τὸ to introduce a quote.
So Εὐριπίδης ἔγραψε τὸ λόγον.
We’d simply write “Euripides wrote λόγον.” No need for quote marks for the Greek if we’re writing English.
