Can someone help me understand this sentence ?
" Alii temere se gesserant, periculum non providerant, nunc in periculo erant. "
Here is my rough translation but it doesn’t sound right: “Others carry themselves without purpose, they do not foresee danger, they are now in danger”

Without looking at it in context, I take it as:
“Some had carried themselves blindly (rashly) and had not seen the danger (peril) and were now in danger”
I’m wondering why you translate the verbs in the present tense, as gesserant and providerant are pluperfect, and erant imperfect.
