Pro-arguments for maintaining classical languages in schools, universities etc.

Dear Text-kitters

Currently I am collecting material for an article about the arguments pro and con for the the presence of classical languages in schools and universities. It seems that we all in this forum can agree about the advantages(and the fun  ) of the classical languages. But what are really the hard-core arguments that can support our interest for the classical learning?

I am looking for:

  • Modern (20th and 21th-century) arguments for the advantages and the legitimisation for learning classical languages in schools and universities.

  • Critique of the presence of classical languages in schools

-Anything you have is of interest, books, articles, websites, persons….

All the best,

you can answer here or send me a private message.

Hello,

Take a look (just google it) at Greek Teachers’ Corner (hosted by UMass). There are many web articles and comments on that site pertaining to the importance of teaching Greek (and by extension Latin) in schools and universities.

I believe that this is the link: http://people.umass.edu/~glawall/grkteach.html
