In this section of his book, Pollux explains some terminology concerning food. I can’t quite understand which term he is tryng to explain in this phrase: τὸ μέντοι ὑπερεμπεπλῆσθαι καὶ ὑπερκεκορέσθαι καὶ ὑπερμαζᾶν ἀπὸ τῆς μάζης ἔλεγον οἱ παλαιοί. One or more of these verbs are terms that were used by ‘the ancients’ (ἔλεγον οἱ παλαιοί), but what is it or what are they? And which one of these verbs is the one he is currently using to explain the others? Unfortunately, there is no translation of this text available online.
What an entertaining sentence. I don’t think any word is explaining another, but rather synonyms, something like "The ancients used the terminology “to gorge, to glut, and to stuff from bread.” For “from bread” I’m not sure if the phrase is to modify all the previous words or if he is just giving an etymological note for the third verb.
