I proposed Textbooks and Study Groups because I think that there is a real need for a general study group organization forum, to keep those posts from clogging up Learning Greek. And if you look at the White forum, it was already mostly that.
Attic Greek?
If we moved all of our Attic Greek questions to an Attic Greek forum, we wouldn’t really have a Learning Greek forum anymore.
We’re all Atticizers here, I guess.
I agree with Joel, except that I’m more like a Homerizer.
Should we actually call the forum “Greek textbooks and study groups” for clarity?
So are we saying that “Learning Greek” is for Attic, while Homeric and Koine Greek should be diverted to the appropriate subforums? That’s never been the underlying thought of the forums, particularly during all those years where textkit encouraged those coming into greek for the first time to do Homeric.
Good question. But that’s the way the Homeric and Koine forums have actually been used in the last few years at least (few posts in those forums are actually related to either of the textbooks they’re named after), and the idea would be to change the names so that they would better reflect the already prevalent situation (except for a little proposed modification to include other early poetry under “Homeric”).
I don’t think “Learning Greek” needs to be clearly limited just to Attic, but it just happens that most posts there are. Of course we have Herodotus, occasional posts about inscriptions, Doric, etc. that still go there quite naturally. We don’t need to call it “Learning Attic”; on the other hand, there would be quite little left for “Learning Greek”, if we had a separate Attic forum.
As for learning strategies, I have no strong opinion of my own. I know there are some active and very knowledgeable members that are not at all convinced by the idea of starting Greek with Homer, and that there used to be others that were very strong supporters of it. I more or less started with Homeric Greek myself, but I don’t know if that debate has to be brought into this.
I’m still waiting for Hylander’s promised post about whether it’s really wise to start Greek with Homer.
edonnelly, I think that’s a decent argument, but I just don’t think that’s the way the forums wound up evolving. We obviously didn’t stick with the textbooks that the forums were initially named after. The Mounce forum evolved into the Koine forum, and the rename poll is really about how to best reflect that, not change it. The Pharr forum became the Homer forum. The White forum died – and I think it has something to do with how people look at Attic Greek versus Homeric and Biblical Greek. I think the reason that the White forum didn’t become the Attic forum is the same reason that a name change wouldn’t accomplish it either.
EDIT: I wrote my post before seeing Paul’s, and I think he makes some of my points better than I do.
Joel, I think this is it.
