participulum

Help with participles. I understand that a participle is a verbal adjective but I would like an alternate explanation to how they work vs what is explained in Wheelock’s seeing as I havn’t covered that yet in LL.

What do you mean alternate explanation?

correct me if i’m wrong, but I think they are like adjectives ending in -ing in English.

The rising sun brings a new day.
The fighting man wins again.
The growing boys need food.

Present active participles are like the English participles ending in “-ing”.

Puer amans - the loving boy, etc…

There’s also perfect passive participles, and future participles, the passive of the latter normally called gerundives.

amo - I love
amare - to love

participles:

amans - loving
amatus - having been loved
amaturus - about to love
amandus - “needing” to be loved
