A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a college student who’s been studying Latin (and several other languages) for quite a while and is also a trained singer. That’s one very narrow intersection on a very important Venn diagram for me, and lo and behold, some of her Latin-language covers happened to use my lyrics! I knew I had to contact her immediately, and we’ve been working together ever since! As it turns out, she’s a Spaniard from the Canary Islands, so she’s a native speaker of modern Romance to boot!
Anyway, as only our second collaboration (the first being Britney Spears’ “Baby, One More Time” in Latin, on her channel), we tackled “Part of Your World” from Disney’s Little Mermaid, and this is the result. I’ve revised the lyrics substantially since sharing them in an earlier post, hopefully for the better, and the singer used a couple more elisions than I’d intended, but I doubt that’s to the song’s detriment at all! As always, I welcome comments, critiques, and/or questions on the translation.
The most interesting thing about this translation for me is some ironically useful ambiguity in the phrase “pars eius mundī.” According to the dictionaries at Latinitium, my go-to, “is/ea/id” is primarily a pronoun and rarely used as an adjective, and when it is, it means “such.” So you can read it as “part of such a world” or as “part of his world,” with the “his” referring to Prince Eric. Either one works, and arguably, the latter, more idiomatic reading works even slightly better in context than the original “part of that world,” connecting more overtly to the “your” that Ariel uses when singing directly to Eric. At least, that’s my interpretation.
