Oxford Latin Dictionary on CD-ROM

This news is making the rounds on the Classics listservs, so I thought I’d post it here, too. Disclosure: I work for Logos Research Systems, so I have an interest in the success of this project. But I think anyone who studies Latin can see the value in having an electronic edition of this inestimable reference work.

Logos Research Systems Announces Project to Digitize Oxford Latin Dictionary

Logos Research Systems, which published an electronic edition of the unabridged Liddell & Scott Greek-English Lexicon in 2003, is now turning its attention to the crown jewel of Latin dictionaries. The company plans to digitize Oxford Latin Dictionary in its entirety, creating a full-text, searchable, tagged edition of this classic reference work.

The electronic edition will be built on the Libronix Digital Library System, which is used to deliver more than 5,000 electronic books from over 100 publishers. Content in the system is interlinked and integrated so that the user may, for example, double-click on a word and the dictionary for the appropriate language will open to the entry for that word.

This will be the first electronic edition of OLD, so the company will be working from the print edition: keyboarding, proofing, tagging, etc. The considerable costs involved will be covered at the outset via a prepublication “subscription” plan.

The company is collecting pre-orders now at a deeply discounted price. If total receipts from pre-orders are enough to cover digitization costs, the project will proceed. If interest is lacking, it will be cancelled. Those who place pre-orders will not be charged if the project is cancelled, and they will not be charged until it’s completed.
