After toiling for quite some time I have finally finished my latest transcription project: a Latin version of Herodoti Historiarum Libri IX. You can download it from its Project Gutenberg-page.

I chose this specific text for several reasons:

  • I was interested in the text as such (always a must for any transcription project I tackle).
  • It provides a lot of text of a suitable intermediate level.
  • It serves as further raw material for phrase hunting.

I hope people will enjoy it. Please share its being available for free at Gutenberg.org.

Do you know who the translator is? In the preface only the names of the editors are given, aren’t they?

I’m not entirely sure, but it’s probably based on Johannes Schweighaeuser’s 1816-edition, with changes made by Karl Wilhelm Dindorf for the Didot-edition (for the complete Didot-series, see this page at Vivarium Novum. The later Latin edition is sometimes word for word the same as Schweighaeuser’s (at least in those cases I had to check something), but in some cases it departs from it. It may not be the best possible translation, but I certainly enjoyed reading the text (interesting Scythian customs).

a corrected version of Herodoti Historiarum Libri IX has been uploaded to Project Gutenberg. This removes 88 typos (spacing, letter swaps).
