NYC Bookstores

Hi all,

Does anyone here from the New York City area know of good used bookstores in NYC that cater to language enthusiasts and/or those interested in the Classics? One, Argosy Books, looks very promising, but I am looking for others.

Thanks in advance,
WB

Hi William,

Are you close enough to NYC that you can visit regularly or are you planning a one-time shopping expedition?

Cordially,

Paul

Hello Paul,

I can do both, actually. (If I found a good place I’d probably visit monthly.) I am right near a PATH stop in New Jersey. Thanks!

WB

Hi William,

Best bets are probably Gotham Book Mart and The Strand Bookstore.

Gotham is at 16 East 46th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues.
Strand is at 12th Street and Broadway.

If you can get to Boston (Cambridge), you must visit Schoenhof’s.

Cordially,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thank you kindly for your suggestions. I will check them out very soon. I may even make a trip to Boston just to visit Schoenhof’s. I have heard great things about that store.

Have a great day,
WB

Hi William,

I understand that you are looking for a used bookstore, but there is a new bookstore that doubles as a university bookstore for Columbia, named Labyrinth Books. I can’t remember the exact address, but it’s just a few blocks from the university. It is mostly–if not exclusively–new books, but I’ve never seen so many Greek and Latin books in one place before! It might be fun just to look through the stacks, or even take the opportunity to look through some books before buying them online.

Hi Nicholas,

Thank you for your response. I will add your sugggestion to my list of places to visit. Your description sounds exciting. I had better bring a lot of money with me when I make my first trip to these stores because I know I won’t be able to exercise willpower.

Thanks again!
