I am proud to announce that my transcription of the adventure novel Pericla Navarchi Magonis sive Expeditio Phoenicia Annis Ante Christum Mille (novel by Léon Cahun, Latin translation by Arcadius Avellanus) is now online. I donated it to Project Gutenberg to ensure its continued existence on the Web.
Even more so than Mysterium Arcae Boulé, another Latin translation by Arcadius Avellanus, this book provides a wonderful opportunity to experience a side of Latin that is far too often absent in the text of the “old ones”: liveliness. Indeed, Arcadius Avellanus believed that there is nothing that cannot be expressed in Latin, including modern things. Out of this belief (among others) grew his series of translations which constitute the Mount Hope Classics (“Pericla Navarchi Magonis”, “Mysterium Arcae Boulé”, “Fabulae Divales”, “Mons Spes, et novellae aliae”, “Insula Thesauraria”) and also his magazine Praeco Latinus.
I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to practise Latin in a fun way, but especially to those trying to find out how to express hands-on activities in this language.
