I’m a retired philosophy lecturer, who taught some Greek philosophy (though not as an area of expertise).
About 35 years ago, I took the first year Greek course at my university. We used JACT Reading Greek. I passed - but at the expense of my research. The following year, I started in on Greek 2: first some Homer, then some Thucydides, then some Euripides. The Classics staff made no concessions to the fact that we hadn’t even finished Reading Greek in the first year.
I couldn’t afford the time the course demanded; I was still a full time teacher/researcher in philosophy.
After that, I let my knowledge dribble away.
Now I’m returning with renewed enthusiasm, and lots of time. I’m going through JACT again. If I have one particular goal in focus, it is to read Plato, starting with the obvious texts, and perhaps moving on to the harder, more philosophical ones, since I’ve already studied some of them in translation.
