New Here

I first came to the board when I got search engine hits for Greek and Latin grammars. What got me to enroll is the Greek/Latin composition boards and the Agora board. But it looks like there are lots of other aspects of this site to explore, something I look forward to doing. I’ll head off to post in the Latin weather thread.

P.S. How should I handle Greek fonts for this site? I can see them just fine, but I am worried about being able to post using them. I have a PC with Windows 10.

Greek fonts:

Start > Settings > Time & Language > Region & Language > Add A Language > Greek > Polytonic

Now in the lower-right-hand corner you can switch between English and Greek keyboards. I’m not 100% sure this is the way to do it in Windows 10 since I added the Greek keyboard layout with Windows 7 (which this computer came with) but try it. It’ll take a little bit to get used to the layout but it’s pretty simple. As far as diacritics:

acute alpha type ;a

grave alpha type ]a

circumflex alpha type [a

smooth breathing alpha type 'a

rough breathing alpha type "a

smooth breathing acute alpha type /a

rough breathing acute alpha type ?a

smooth breathing grave alpha type \a

rough breathing grave alpha type |a

circumflex smooth breathing alpha type =a

circumflex rough breathing alpha type +a

alpha iota subscript type {a

acute alpha iota subscript type {ctrl} {alt} ;a

grave alpha iota subscript type {ctrl} {alt} ]a

circumflex alpha iota subscript type {ctrl} {alt} [a

Thanks! It works with Linux too. Is there a way to type Beta Code instead?

Sorry – I don’t know what that is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_Code

It is used here, for example: http://www.typegreek.com/

I see.

test: τῶν ἀνθρώπων

I don’t see how there could be a problem with using Beta keys instead of the Windows layout (it’s much more intuitive) if you just type into the typegreek program and copy/paste it.

Or maybe I’m misunderstanding your question?

I mean, it would be nice to type directly here on Textkit using Beta Code the same way you use the Greek keyboard you showed. Now I type Beta Code on typegreek.com, copy, and paste.

Ah, I see. I don’t know if there’s a way to directly use Beta Code here but as this board uses the same template as any of the others the company hosts I would doubt that there would be support for it. I must say that the Typegreek site is much more natural and easy to use, although I don’t see how it deals with complex diacritics. Thanks for letting me know about it!

(ed: I don’t think there’s a way to type Greek in Windows but the Greek Polytonic layout – that is, no Beta Code.)

Thanks everyone. I sent in any earlier post but it seems to have gotten lost between composition and moderation. Getting polytonic Greek worked fine on Windows 10, only wrinkle was that I had to select it after installing Greek and going to options under the Greek keyboard.

Maybe it is possible to produce a device independent keyboard layout based on Beta Code. I found this website:

bedwere what operating system do you use? can you not make the move from betacode to unicode?

Linux εἰς τοῦς αἰῶνας.

I thought linux used unicode. Do you have a very old distribution? does this help?

I’m using Debian 8.5 Jessie. But my problem is not that I cannot use Unicode. Rather what I want is a keyboard layout that produces automatically polytonic Greek text with Unicode characters when I type Beta Code. Now I can use the standard Greek polytonic keyboard layout, but I don’t like it.
