A friend is starting some video game group, and asked me to translate some of his name ideas into latin. Unfortunately I remember almost nothing from my couple years of latin. I’d really appreciate if someone could help me out putting these few things into latin:
Knights of the Abyss
Bringers of Darkness
Destroyers of Light
Under the Veil of Night
Happy sounding stuff huh? Thanks in advance for your help.
It’s a good thing you came here, I feel awful when I see gamer clans with incorrect Latin names. By no means questioning Turp’s translations, I’ll offer some of my own for variety. The word order in my translations is not strict so you can rearrange them if you like to produce different effects (I wouldn’t mess with the last one though).
Knights of the Abyss
equites chai
templarii chai
chaos, -i “abyss, chaos”
templarius, -i is really a medieval word for a “knights templar”
Bringers of Darkness
if you wanted to invent a word you could say tenebriferi, tenebri- “darkness” -feri “bringers”; in contrast to luciferi “bringers of light”.
There are however some words which already exist, umbriferi means “bringers/bearers of shadow” (shadow=darkness) and noctiferi “night-bringers” (“night-bringer” - also a nickname for the evening star).
if you wanted more than just one compound word you could say tenebras ferentes.
Destroyers of Light
carnifex lucis vastator lucis
carnifex is a pretty gruesome word, it means executioner, butcher, destroyer, etc., but is really a compound of the parts carni- “meat” and -fex “maker”, “meat-maker”.
vastator is not a mild word, but in comparison to carnifex it is not quite as graphic. You see it in the English word “devastator”.
Cool stuff, thanks a ton. We used Sub Integumento Noctis for our name, but maybe we can use some of those others for ranks within the guild.
I’ve seen a few clans with random Latin words strung together before too - pretty lame. Really appreciate your help, now we won’t be one of those Very Happy
