Need help with German / introducing me

Hello all,

I will be applying to Law school this fall/spring to begin fall 2005. Initially I really wanted to go to the U.S., but then realized I cannot afford US$30’000 per year, and getting into serious debt would further aggravate my depression.

Anyway, I’m hunting around Europe, and found some cool programs in France and Germany. The problem is, I DO NOT SPEAK GERMAN! (French and English are both my mother tongues, and I am fluent in Spanish).
Application to German universities begin in Spring.

The point is I need a realistic answer to the following question: is it possible to learn (enough) German in 6 months at the rate of about 3-4hrs per day, with maybe a one month language course somewhere in Germany? I should add that I am already quite used to the sound of the language, as most of my friends, and my girlfriend, are German-speakers.

I’ll take advantage to introduce myself, as I’ve been hanging around your website for the past few weeks. I’m Canadian, but live in Geneva, Switzerland, where I completed a undergrad in political science and economics, and now work here in a law firm whose list of clients include the Tobacco industry, the Russian mafia, money launderers, and weapon smugglers (no kidding).

I have no idea why I studied political science and economics, my real interests being European history, as well as the history and philosophy of sciences. I Should have done physics, but I was too much of a wuss to admit it to myself. My interest in Latin is also “de longue date”, although I only started learning it (O’Dodge) about four months ago, with the specific Idea of reading the “scientific” texts of the late middle ages and the renaissance. This is how I found textkit.

Anyway, I appreciate yr advice, valuable since it seems everybody here has a hobby of learning every conceivable language, both ancient and modern.

Why law, you might ask? Actually, I am not interested in being a lawyer (except mavbe at the International Criminal Court), but it seems I could get some fun jobs afterwards. Am I fooling myself?

O’Dodge? comment?

O’Dodge ha ha. Has German messed up your mind already.

You can learn German 1.25 hours per day I think with Hugo German in 3 Months.

How embarassing D’Ooge

O’Dodge sounds quite nice actually.

Well, if your girlfriend speakes German … I think with a good course and a lot of practice (you’d have to practice it with her!) Then you stand a chance I think that by the time you’re ready for uni you’ll know enough to get about in Germany, but I’m not too sure if you’d know enough to follow a law degree course in German…
BTW, I hate the Russian Mafia, can’t you just make sure they loose their cases? They are so annoying … (hehehe, I suppose at least they are only annoying here, must be really bad in Russia).

I’m Canadian, but live in Geneva, Switzerland

Isn’t German spoken in Switzerland by some people? You could certainly get practice.

Well, I’m not too sure if “Schwitzerdütsch” is the best opportunity for a beginner to practice German.
Staying in Germany for some time would be better.

Does anyone know where I can download a German grammar on the net?
I kind of like the old school pedagogic methods (like D’Ooge), where you have to go through hours and hours of exercises, declensions, conjugasions etc…

http://angli02.kgw.tu-berlin.de/call/webofdic/grammars.html has grammar books for a lot of languages.

There’s an “Essential German” at http://www.geocities.com/gene_moutoux/Germain.htm that may be useful to you. (Or not!)
