Here are my answers to the translation drills of Zuntz’s sixth lesson; if you could help me identifying any errors, I would be very glad! Please note that, in order to save time, I have not written the smooth breathing.
I. English > Greek
a) Do not say (sg.) few in many (words), but much in few!
Μὴ ολίγα εν πολλοῖς λέγε, αλλὰ πολλὰ εν ολίγοις.
b) Fools say foolish things.
Mῶροι μῶρα λέγουσιν.
c) Men are rational beings.
Άνθρωποι ζῷα λογικά.
d) You (pl.) will not abolish muders by murders.
Ου λύσετε φόνους φόνοις.
e) We shall prevent you (sg.) from evil.
Κωλύσομέν σε ποιεῖν τὰ κακά.
f) We did not prevent you (sg.) from doing right.
Ουκ εκωλύομέν σε ποιεῖν τὰ καλά.
g) We are not slaves to the barbarians.
Ου δουλεύομεν τοῖς βαρβάροις.
h) A just man acts justly.
Ὁ δίκαιος δίκαια πράττει.
i) I heard the best things.
Ήκουον τὰ άριστα.
j) We expected everything.
Πάντα ηλπίζομεν.
II. Greek > English
A5. Ου χρὴ ακούειν τὰ μῶρα.
One does not need to hear rubbish.
B2. Χρὴ μανθάνειν τε καὶ διδάσκειν τὰ άριστα.
It is necessary to learn and teach what is best.
C3. Άλλα άλλοις καλά.
Different things are good to different people.
E1. Έγωγε τὰ άριστα εδίδασκόν σε.
I teached you myself what is best.
G1. Χρὴ ελπίζειν τὰ άριστα.
One must hope for the best.
I2. ~Αρ’ουκ οικτίρεις με; καὶ γὰρ ὁ τύραννος ῴκτιρε τὸν υἱον.
Do you not pity me? Even the tyran pities the (his?) son.
K. Λέγειν σὺ δεινός, μανθάνειν δ’εγὼ κακός.
You speak wonderfully, but I understand poorly
L. Tὰ δίκαια και καλὰ αγατά εστιν, τὰ δ’άδικα καὶ αισχρὰ κακά.
What is just and beautiful is good, and what is unjust and ugly is bad.
It has been a joy to learn Greek, although with very slow progress due to little time.
