moneo

Hi, I am slightly confused about this issue.

Can moneo take both an indirect command and an indirect statement?
for example:
I warned him that he would fail
I advised him to go to Rome

Thanks

there are two possible constructions with monere, (and many verbs with meanings alike). one is the oblique, which takes the infinitive with a accusative subject, for instance: “monui eum romam ire”; another one is a construction with the conjunction ut + subj: “monui eum ut defecisset”.

in the first the argument of the verb is the whole reduced sentence eum romam ire, in the second is eum, and the counsil is thus expanded by the conjunction in a direct statement.
