I learned that all nouns with a consonantal Iota stem are feminine.
I just stumbled on [size=150]πόσις[/size].
(Actually, two words spelled the samein nom.sg. One ‘a drink’ fem. The other ‘husband’ masc.)

Hi Bert, sorry the only book I have at work which talks about the history of this word is Chantraine’s Dictionnaire étymologique 1968. It says that the form of that word poses problems: there’s been a debate for the last 100 years whether it came from *poti- or *pot-, so quite possibly it didn’t once have consonantal i, but I don’t know either way.
