“Quamquam nūllō modō labōrem agricolārum sordidum imdignumve esse exīstimat…”
Is labōrem (of the farmers) the accusative object of existimare and “sordidum indignumve esse” just an adjective?
Paul.

Quamquam nūllō modō labōrem agricolārum sordidum indignumve esse exīstimat.
labōrem is the subject accusative, while sordidum and indignum are predicate adjectives. In direct speech, it would look like this:
Labor agricolārum nūllō modō est sordidus vel indignus.
Farmers’ work is in no way base or shameful.
esse is the verb which was est in direct speech; it’s been turned into an infinitive to meet the requirements of indirect speech, oratio obliqua.
Thanks. Yes, of course existimare being a “thinking” verb turns the whole thing into “indirect wossname”, with its infinitive and accusative. This stuff isn’t clicking as it should. I blame life ![]()
