I have been learning Greek from an old Teach Yourself (F Kinchin Smith) and while I find the vocabulary and grammar fine to pick up when well explained, the sections where masses of terms are used to describe words are difficult to follow. I assume this is because I have never formally followed any language to a very high level at which these terms would be used, so I end up having to refer to the internet to discover what the author means. Could anyone suggest a book which covers all these basics of any language (I had no idea what declension was before learning Greek), so that I can better follow the text?

I had the same trouble when I was starting with Greek. I’m not sure if these will cover everything you need, but here are some essays from William Harris’ website (there are other things there that you will probably find helpful). There is also a book something like “English Grammar for Students of Latin”, but it would be loosely helpful for Greek as well.
The Intelligent Person’s Guide to Greek
English Grammar as Prolegomena to Latin (probably useful for Greek as well)
The Linguistics of English
That looks to be very helpful, from a quick glance at the links. Much better than trudging through an entire book of english grammar. Thank you very much, don’t think I would have found these by myself.
