question about the enclitic ne. I think I have the general sense of the question but I am not sure.
Magnine sunt fluvii Africae? I think this means what are the great rivers of Africa but it doesn’t make sense. Wouldn’t Quis be a better word to use? my understanding is that ne is used to ask questions that are vaque unclear or simillar to num to which the answer is no. However in the above sentence the meaning isn’t coning across crealy. Is it possible for ne to substitute for words such as quot, quis or quid?
Since the Romans didn’t have punctuation marks like “?? the “–ne? enclitic as the same meaning as the fact that in English the verb comes first to indicate it is a question an not and affirmation.
The “-ne? is neuter in the meaning that the asker is not waiting a certain answer , while the “num? means that a negative answer is expected and the “nonne" means that a positive answer is expected.
