Latin Prose Composition - North/Hillard

Is there any particular reason why this is for Acrobat Reader only? Other PDF’s can be opened by Preview on my Mac, but the ones with AR5 in the title cannot. Ofcourse AR5 refers to Acrobat Reader 5, but why is this?

Hi Adelheid

I use AR5 in the file title name to tell me that it requires Acrobat 5.0 or above just as you said. This is because the file is using Adobe’s adpative compression which literally shrinks the file size in half. So it’s a good trade off.

I wasn’t aware however that other PDF viewers has problems with this file.

thanks,
jeff

The files with AR5 in the title do open, but show only blank pages. Acrobat opens them with no problem at all. I think that my Preview app can’t handle that compression then. Is it at all possible to offer them without the compression also?

To explain:

I import all PDF’s into a special app (Devonthink) where I have set Preview as the default app to view PDF’s, because it is a lot faster than Acrobat.

Adelheid

Hi Again,

Yes, I keep on the server both the compressed AR5s and the larger files that are uncompressed. I don’t really publish the links but you can find them simply by removing AR5 from the link title of any file.

So N&H is this:

Jeff

OK, that one works fine.

Thanks for the tip.

I am using Mandrake 10.0 with Konqueror browser, and pdfs open in the browser. I when I open a textkit pdf online, the scanned images of the pages dont appear. I just see blank pages. When I download one, I get the same thing. This also was the case when I was running Redhat 9 with Mozilla and xpdf a couple weeks ago. This is not a problem with my computer because I downloaded a pdf from the Internet Archives and the scanned page images appear in it normally.

My xpdf (Linux on Scratch and Redhat) handles AR5 just fine, though my other pdf viewers don’t. Maybe I have a newer version of xpdf?
