Hi everyone,
I’ve recently started learning Latin because as an aspiring linguist, I thought it would be a good idea to have some basic knowledge in this language. However, I wish to ask how useful Latin is to linguists and translators. My teacher tells me that speaking/understanding Latin will be very useful for my future career- almost necessary. I am at the point in my studies of other foreign languages that knowing Latin will not help me understand that language better (I already understand the grammar and have no problem with vocabulary). I enjoy studying languages because I like being able to communicate with people - obviously I can’t do that with Latin.
I guess my question is: Is knowledge of Latin really important for linguists to have? My teacher claims that 99% of linguists speak latin, but I have found nothing that supports that.
