introduction

Hi, back in the 1980s I studied Classics in college and grad school, a whopping eight years altogether, and then went on to pursue another career involving books and writing, instead of going into education, which would have been the nomal route.

I find as I’m getting more settled in my sixties I’m returning to the classics more and more, if only because I don’t want to lose all that stuff I crammed into my head when I was much younger. Plus I find this is really a field I love.

I started by making a go at reading the entire Aeneid and then returning to my more congenial heroes Catullus, Horace and Propertius.

I’m also really interested in Greek tragedy and its ramifications, spending four months working my way thru Euripides’ Orestes (having read Medea, Hippolytos and Bacchae in college; I may revisit those later on). Sophocles is next.
