Hello everyone,
This is my first post here at TextKit. I am a 26 year-old teacher of religion and language arts at an international secondary school in West Africa. My formal educational includes a Bachelor of arts in English, and a Masters in Secondary Education. As far as classical languages go, I took Greek for a while in my undergraduate studies in order to fulfill a language requirement, but beyond a basic understanding of inflection and having a lot of root words “on file,” so to speak, I do not remember much. In the past, due to schooling and my living overseas, I have had occasion to learn Spanish, Indonesian, and French reasonably well. My interest in Latin led me to discovering the TextKit community.
I became interested in Latin after writing a thesis paper on Thomas Aquinas and classical approaches to education for my Masters. I am currently working through Wheelock’s text as a sort of grammatical professional development for myself, but my goal is to get to the point where I can read St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas in the original. I also have loved Vergil’s poetry for many years, and would like to be able to experience his poetic art in the original language. Dante referring to Vergil as “glory and light to other poets” certainly piques my interest. Also, as an educator, becoming ever more familiar with the classical world and its culture is valuable in and of itself. That is something in which I hope to make career-long process.
