Intro for new user Gaston

Hi! I am new to this type of forum so I am a little lost about getting started here. I heard about this forum after reading a review in Amazon.com that said I could find the exercise key to Benjamin D’Ooge’s book: Latin for Beginners (thank you R.Lau for your Amazon review!) I am JUST getting started with learning Latin - on my own - having retired to the countryside of France (from the USA) so being able to “check my work” was a happy revelation. Looking through the posts here is very exciting. It’s not easy to learn a language without a teacher. Thank you to all of you on this site.

Welcome to Textkit, Gaston!

Gaston,

Welcome to Textkit! I have only been on the site a few months, but it is definitely a great resource.

I’m pretty jealous, by the way, of your current living situation. A retired American on the countryside of France! Sounds amazing!

Since you are just getting started, here are a few things I have done that have helped me: check-out Duolingo, the free language-learning website. They have a limited Latin course that could be a good and entertaining start. I used “Wheelock’s Latin”, but a lot of others really like “Lingua Latina per se Illustrata”. The latter is full-immersion. It starts with baby-Latin and works toward more complex sentences.

It would also be worthwhile to find a few key Latin quotes to commit to memory. It is a nice way to start putting some Latin into your head.

Good luck, and welcome!
