trānsfūgit ex compositō Gabiōs patris in sē saevitiam nōn tolerandam querēns

He (Sextus) deserted from the agreement to the Gabii lamenting the…cruelty of his father.

I’m not sure what in sē is supposed to be doing in this sentence.

Also, Orberg changed intolerabilem in the original Latin to nōn tolerandam. Is this supposed to be a gerundive, and if so, how would I translate it?

My not so humble opinion. :wink:
in se tells you towards whom was the cruelty directed. As for the difference between non tolerandam and intolerabilem, it is pretty tenuous to me.
By the way, ex composito is by agreement. Also, Gabii is a city, not a people.
