Implied participle in X.An.1.5.14?

…ἔτυχε γὰρ ὕστερος προσιὼν καὶ τάξις αὐτῷ ἑπομένη τῶν ὁπλιτῶν…

Is ὕστερος in Nominative case because the participle ὤν (of εἰμί which is a linking verb) is implied here?

Thanks! —Mitch

P.S. And another question. I’m using a Windows computer and when I try to type Greek in a post for this forum, the accents and breathings don’t appear. For example, to type εἰμί in this post, I selected the Greek Polytonic keyboard option and pressed the keys e’imqi but this just put ειμι not εἰμί into my post. So I had to switch to Notepad, type e’imqi to get εἰμί and copy/paste this into my post. Is there a setting somwhere in this forum so that the Windows Greek Polytonic keyboard will work properly?

ὕστερος is nominative because it agrees with the implied subject of the parenthetical, Πρόξενος. It’s predicative, qualifying the verbal unit ἔτυχε προιὼν: “he happened to be advancing later/towards the rear.”

See Smyth § 1042:

Ah of course, thanks.

At Thuc.1.3.3 a papyrus (P.Oxy.3878) has ὕστερος but the medieval tradition has ὕστερον, adverbial (πολλῷ γὰρ ὕστερον ἔτι καὶ τῶν Τρωικῶν γενόμενος. Modern editors have all printed ὕστερον there, but adjectival -ος is probably right, cf. Thuc.1.14.1 and this Xenophon passage, and for corruption to the adverb e.g. Thuc.1.91.5.
