Salvete sodales
The above mock-Latin aphorism, recently popularized variantly as Nolite te bastardes carborundum by the TV series The Handmaids Tale, is translated Don’t let the bastards grind you down. Having performed due diligence both in this forum and online, I have yet to find an accurate Latin expression of this injunction.
I humbly venture Noli(te) pati ut te(vos) scelesti atterant as a possibility. Hopefully, the more learned here will capture the flavor of the aphorism more accurately than I. (In particular, scelesti doesn’t seem to express the essentially oppressive nature of the bastards). Wiki. has background on the saying, for anybody interested.
