Just wanted to recommend the following book to those of you – especially beginners in Greek like I am – who want to read Xenophon’s Anabasis: The Landmark Xenophon’s Anabasis (Pantheon Books, 2021). I stumbled across this book back in April when I was browsing the Classical Greek section of our university library. Packed with detailed maps, helpful illustrations, a fresh new translation of Anabasis with copious footnotes, and many helpful essays on various topics relating to the period, I quickly realized the book would be a terrific help as I slowly work through the Greek in the Loeb volume on Anabasis.
And so I tried to order it – and discovered that it wasn’t available on Amazon or anywhere else! Strange, since it was published only a couple of years ago and the other older titles in the Landmark series are still available.
So I reached out to Penguin Random House the publisher, and was told that the book was out of print and there were no plans to reprint it. What?!?
So then I tried contacting Pantheon Books who holds the imprint, and they said they would ask the book’s editorial team to clarify the situation. I also reached out to the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies as David Thomas, one of the book’s authors, is the Vice President of the Society. And I reached out to the Asian University for Women in Bangladesh where the other author Shane Brennan is on academic staff. David soon replied to thank me and report that I had set the cat among the pigeons, and said that Bob Strassler, the series editor of the Landbook series, was going to try and find out what was going on, and Shane replied similarly. And Bob, who is reported to be currently working on the last edition of the Landmark series which will be a volume on Polybius, then wrote to the Publishing Director at Penguin Random House, and a few weeks later I was informed that a new run of 2,500 copies of the book had been scheduled for July. The book eventually became available on Amazon in mid August, so I now I have my own personal copy of it and am looking forward to renewing my journey upcountry with Xenophon and his gang.
All this to say once more that if you want to read Anabasis then buy this book!
Cheers, Mitch
